Let me begin by telling you a little about my background: For as long as I can remember, I've had an obsession with making things better. Even in my youth, I was a kid with big ideas, radical dreams, but growing up in a sometimes rough environment in Las Vegas surrounded by negative people, drugs and gangs, without a father figure, my own negative thoughts would sometimes get the best of me. It was not until I attended a seminar and surrounded my self with positive people, that my life really begin to take off, from where I was at. Eventually the desires I once had as a kid to make things better came back, and then became about making the lives of other people better. The more I learned, the more creativity I unleashed within myself. Soon it seemed there was more for me to do than was possible.
Like you, I had huge dreams about what I could do in my lifetime and I wasn't satisfied just sitting around thinking about it. I was committed to turning those dreams into a reality, but I had no clear, step-by-step system for successfully achieving my ultimate goals and desires. As time went on I began to achieve at higher levels than I was use too, but my life became more and more complex. And I didn't even realize that I had plateaued, in my speaking, and in my writing, I was stale like an old piece of bread, because thats what happen if we don't change, we get stale just like bread. Has this ever happened to you? All of a sudden your momentum just stops, and you feel like you living off your past accomplishments?
Talking about when you were you were fresh dough. I knew I never wanted to be one of those people who sabotage their own success because they become caught up in their ego and are unwilling to change because they don't want to admit they need help. These people end up being an example of the definItion of insanity, you know, like a fly trying to get out of a window just hitting the glass over and over until It dies. Have you ever seen that? I knew something had to change but I didn't know what or how, here I was living by a lot of philosophies that were bettering my life, but I was ignoring a huge one, one that will determine for most people how far they go in life. "WHAT GOT YOU HERE WONT GET YOU THERE". People are naturally creatures of habit, and when left to do things on their own, we will often do the same things over and over again expecting for different results, does that sound like any body you know? So even though I was not, unsuccessful, I knew I didn't just want to stop were I was, I knew I could go further, as Im sure you do as well, thats why you're reading this. You know you got more in you!
Has something ever happened to you that caused you to see things differently? One day I walked into the gym and saw a friend I had not seen In a while, we use to work out together, and when I saw him I almost didn't recognize him, because he looked in such good shape I couldn't believe it, I asked him if he was taking steroids because I could not believe the difference in his body, I kept joking with him and telling him, I want what ever he's taking. He said " Im not taking steroids, as he smiled, he said, I just got tired of coming to the gym and not seeing improvements for a while, so I decided to take my dads advice witch was, what got you here wont get you there, so I changed my routine and that helped a little, but I noticed I was still do things that were similar because, deep down I really didn't know what to do to get the results I was after, so I decided to get a coach, he said, Jacob I have learned so much from my coach and changed my routine so drastically that, my body is finally in the shape I Always wanted to be. He said Jacob, your best efforts have brought you this far, so if you want to step it up, Let go of your ego, admit you don't know it all and get a coach, it worked for me. Because what got you here wont get you there!
Thats when I realized I need to change my way of thinking and get a coach, and because of that experience I did, and I have once again broken thru a new plateau in my speaking and my writing as you can tell, by this amazing blog lol. I did it,
- By number 1 reading new information, I actually went out and bought this one speakers program called create a killer key note by craig valentine so that I could make an intelligent change in my writing and speaking.
- Number 2 I hired a coach who was doing what I wanted to do, he's a little further along in his career and his insights have been priceless, so getting a coach is a must, you have to have a coach, no exceptions, now if you can not afford a coach, I would ask who ever you want to coach you if they are willing to trade services, maybe you got something they want because we are all good at something, Find someone who needs what you got and vice versa.
- Number 3 at the very least get a mentor, somebody you can ask questions who has been where you want to go, they don't even have to know they are your mentor because people like helping people, so just by taking to them at lunch or calling them on the phone every once in a while and casually asking them questions is a great way to keep a mentor in you life that doesn't even know they are you mentor.
